There are lots of good sales this week and that's a sure sign of Spring right around the corner! Red peppers, broccoli crowns, and dried fruit haven't been on a good sale for a while, so it's a great time to get some now while the prices are decent. I always buy broccoli crowns when the price is decent instead of regular broccoli with stalks because I'm not a big fan of the stalks. I usually end up just cutting the stems off and using them for vegetable stock or soup (I'll be posting a recipe soon). Broccoli crowns are at a great price this week at $0.99/lb so if you usually end up throwing out your stalks or mustering through them even though you're not a big fan, this sale is for you! |
The fairly regular sale prices this week (items that usually go on sale average once a month or more) include mushrooms, grape tomatoes, oranges, pears, cheese, yogourt, crackers, tomatoes and cucumbers. It's not a great sale on cheese $4.44/500g bar, but it's good. My stock up price is anything under $4.00/500g bar and a fairly regular sale is $5.00 or less for a 500g bar. The crackers this week are at a great price. The Christie crackers are an item that fairly frequently go on sale though for $2.00 or less per box.
The only other notable sales include strawberries (really good sale at $1.44/454g), blackberries (really good sale at $1.29/170g), and toothbrushes ($1.00 each). Toothbrushes (and toothpaste) are almost ALWAYS on sale somewhere for $1.00. However, I have a favourite toothbrush that I prefer over all the other ones I've tried and it's the one that is on sale this week. It's the Oral B Cavity Defence. It doesn't go on sale as frequently as the other brands/types do. It's often Colgate brushes and paste that go on sale regularly.
I have included bananas on the list mainly so I remember to buy them, but not because they are on sale. They are available at any of the less expensive grocery stores (Food Basics, FreshCo, etc.) for $0.57/lb.
I should mention in case I haven't already (will be doing a post in the future to elaborate more) that I price match. I only go to one store (usually FreshCo, although the last two weeks I've gone to No Frills) once a week. This saves me both gas and lots of time. Most people think price matching is a hassle, but as long as your minimally organized it's very easy and usually takes no extra time. The only difference I've experienced is that some cashiers are faster than others at price matching, but because I now shop once a week because of the Healthy Snack Fund (and usually at the same store) I know who the faster ones are.
Update: Find out what I actually bought!
