There are even more great sales this week than there were last week! I'm stocked up on quite a few items however, so I didn't write down every good sale. The fairly regular sale prices this week (items that usually go on sale average once a month or more) include mushrooms, orange juice, tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, oranges, pears, and yogourt. All these items are at really good prices this week as well, so now is the time to buy a few extra if you can! Some good pantry items to stock up on while the prices are good this week are potatoes (10lb white or russet) for $1.88, apples (3lb bag of mcintosh, red delicious, empire or cortland) for $1.88 and carrots (3lb bag) for $1.00. All these items should last for at least a month if stored (usually longer though). |
Pineapple is on an ok sale $1.88 each. This is a price where I would only buy one if we needed or wanted some. I only put it on my list because I wanted to buy something a bit different for the Healthy Snack Fund this week.
Something I haven't seen in the flyers lately are nectarines. At $1.49 it's not a very good sale, but it's an ok price to get a few as a "treat". We will often buy a special kind of fruit or vegetable as a "treat" instead of a bag of chips/chocolate bar! In this house we actually get excited when we see cherries or dragonfruit on sale!
Recipe/Meal Ideas for this week's "sales":
- apple pie/crisp/sauce (anything with apples)
- pear/nectarine cobbler
- homemade fries/chips
- mashed potatoes
- homemade tomato sauce/soup (regular pasta is also on sale this week)
- fruit salad (with pineapple, strawberries, frozen fruit)
- tomato and cucumber sandwiches (sounds REALLY weird, but they are really good, seriously!)
- smoothies (see my 'standard' smoothie recipe)
- greek salad or pasta
- green juice
- homemade salsa and tortilla chips (tortilla chips on sale no frills - advertised in community voices)
- guacamole (avocadoes on sale $2.88 for bag of 5 @ Food Basics)
